sight. In the last 25 years, the 8 year college and
postgraduate program leading to the Doctor of Optometry
degree has been enhanced to include extensive course
work and clinical training the the following areas:
- Pharmacology
- Neurology
- Pathology
- Ocular
Disease DIagnosis and Treatment
Optometrists
with a Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agent (TPA) Certification
are qualified to manage patients with a diverse range
of symptoms and pathology .Optometry offices:
- Diagnose
and treat most eye problems on the spot
- Know
of ocular and systemic manifestations of disease
- Have
the ability to prescribe many types of ocular and
systemic medications
- Have
the ability to order smears, cultures and diagnostic
tests
- Have
up-to-date instrumentation for the eyes and adnexa
- Provide
cost-effective eyecare
Optometrists
have invested in ophthalmic equipment to ensure accurate
diagnosis and timely treatment of most eyecare problems.
Dilating agents allow the optometrist to see a wide-angle
view of ocular structures in the back of the eye.
The
standards for eyecare now demand higher technology
and greater familiarity with sight-threatening and
systemic conditions.
The
biomicroscope, or slit lamp, is an example of equipment
found in every optometrist's examining room. It is
a versatile ophthalmic microscope, which magnifies
the structure of the eye some 14 to 35 times. Slit
lamps are invaluable for diagnosing corneal conditions
and critical for removing foreign bodies.
