Optometrists have invested in ophthalmic equipment to ensure accurate diagnosis and timely treatment of most eyecare problems. Dilating agents allow the optometrist to see a wide-angle view of ocular structures in the back of the eye.

The standards for eyecare now demand higher technology and greater familiarity with sight-threatening and systemic conditions.

The biomicroscope, or slit lamp, is an example of equipment found in every optometrist's examining room. It is a versatile ophthalmic microscope, which magnifies the structure of the eye some 14 to 35 times. Slit lamps are invaluable for diagnosing corneal conditions and critical for removing foreign bodies.
