Obtaining
OPTOmap Retinal Images is comfortable, quick and very
simple. By looking into the OPTOmap Eyepiece the digital
image of your retina is captured in less than a second.
A
small flash indicates the image has been taken. Nothing
touches your eye during the process. Your OPTOmap Retinal
Image is then immediately displayed for your eye specialist
to review with you.
Best
of all - the OPTOmap Retinal Exam does NOT require dilating
drops which typically cause blurred vision and sensitivity
to light for hours.
Your
image will be stored electronically. This gives us a
permanent record of the condition of your retina. This
is very important in assisting the detection and measurement
of any changes to your retina the next time you get
your eyes examined. Some of the diseases that can be
detected are:
-
Diabetic
Retinopathy (DR) - Caused by changes in the blood
vessels of the retina, DR is the leading cause of
blindness in America and affects nearly half of all
people with diabetes - from the American Diabetes
Association
-
Hypertension
(High Blood Pressure) - Increased pressure in the
blood vessels can result in damage to blood vessels
in the eye - www.bloodpressure.com
-
Age
Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) - Caused by the
changes in the retina due to the body's aging process,
ARMD is the leading cause of blindness for those aged
55+ in America - American Macular Degeneration Foundation
-
Retinal
Detachment (RD) - Caused by severe nearsightedness
or trauma, RD can also occur in patients with systemic
diseases such as diabetes and will likely lead to
permanent vision loss if not detected

A
professional of optometry is dedicated to preserving sight.
In the last 25 years, the 8 year college and postgraduate
program leading to the Doctor of Optometry degree has
been enhanced to include extensive course work and clinical
training the the following areas:
- Pharmacology
- Neurology
- Pathology
- Ocular
Disease Diagnosis and Treatment
Optometrists
with Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agent (TPA) certification
are qualified to manage patients with a diverse range
of symptoms and pathology. Optometry offices:
- Diagnose
and treat most eye problems on the spot
- Know
of ocular and systemic manifestations of disease
- Have
the ability to prescribe many types of ocular and
systemic medications
- Have
the ability to order smears, cultures and diagnostic
tests
- Have
up-to-date instrumentation for the eyes and adnexa
- Provide
cost-effective eyecare
Optometrists
have invested in ophthalmic equipment to ensure accurate
diagnosis and timely treatment of most eyecare problems.
Dilating agents allow the optometrist to see a wide-angle
view of ocular structures in the back of the eye. The
standards for eyecare now demand higher technology and
greater familiarity with sight-threatening and systemic
conditions. The biomicroscope, or slit lamp, is an example
of equipment found in every optometrist's examining
room. It is a versatile ophthalmic microscope, which
magnifies the structure of the eye some 14 to 35 times.
Slit lamps are invaluable for diagnosing corneal conditions
and critical for removing foreign bodies.
